What's for dinner!?!

Why, oh, WHY am I posting what we're having for dinner every night in the right sidebar of the blog? Because a) we're trying to get healthy and this keeps me honest/inspired and b) I love hearing what other people are having for dinner. (Yes! You should share!)

We've been meaning to do this for ages (get healthy, I mean), but Melissa's recent blog post at Decapitating Shadows about high fructose corn syrup kicked us in to high gear. And it's going really well!

We've been making from scratch a lot more and instead of eating Tyson chicken nuggets, the girls have been eating, quite willingly, oven baked chicken breasts with a crust of wheat germ and spices. For afterschool snacks, they can choose one thing out of each of three bins we keep stocked in the fridge--one has grain stuff, like granola bars or whole grain cereal, one has protein stuff, like yogurt, cheese or peanutbutter and carrots and one has fruits and vegetables. It's all packaged pretty small, but they get a nice well-rounded snack to tide them until dinner.

So now I'm off to make whole wheat sweetpotato bread and homemade applesauce for snacks tomorrow.

Oh, P.S. Claudia's announced she's a vegetarian now. Ack!!! But apparently she has principles, so what are you gonna do?

Oh, man, if you need quick/healthy dinner ideas, please let me know, as I have a stockpile. I've been living in my own little bubble for so long that I didn't realize what a complete Food Nazi I've become. Now that I'm sending toddler meals to daycare (and seeing what the other kids are eating) I realize how WEIRD we are. My 2-year-old loves homemade hummus. Capital "W" weird, right?

Does Claudia know that meat is tasty? That's the principle that I operate on.

We totally need quick/healthy dinner ideas!! You wouldn't believe what a nightmare (do I really mean wonderful roller coaster ride?) it is to cook for two adults who aren't so crazy about plain pasta, one 9-year-old who won't eat anything with any kind of sauce or seasoning, one 9-year-old who won't eat anything even vaguely spicey and a 12-year-old who won't eat meat.

So yes! And no, not weird. I made homemade hummus for the first time the other day, sans tahini because I can't find tahini here (but I haven't been to Trader Joe's yet) and it was awesome.

Jason, ha! Yes, Claudia is a total meat lover, so this should be interesting.

I second the plea for quick healthy dinner ideas. Bonus points if everything comes in "nugget" form.

The homemade hummus is totally awesome.

if you require Claudia to eat Tempeh or Tofu each night for dinner, she might beg you for meat. Might even kill it herself.
I did vegetarian for one year after being forced to watch slaughter house footage at a Whole Foods "Tribal" gathering. It's hard to find a good protein replacment that has a texture that doesn't induce a gag reflex.

The mere thought of tofu always makes me gag.

So now I'm wondering how WF meat slaughtering practices differ from conventional.

Animals have to be raised and slaughtered in a humane way to meet WF standards.
I'm starting to sound like i drink too much of the kool-aid.
The other day in "Wild Oats Integration Training" our Regional President started off the day by telling us that the success of the merger would rely on our being compassionate to our WO team members. He told us "you WILL be COMPASIONATE (or else you will negatively affect the stock price and i will fire your ass!)".
